Cake Mix Turned into a Bundt Cake
For this Apple Bundt Cake with Cake Mix recipe, I used Betty Crocker butter pecan cake mix. However, you can use any cake mix you have on hand. When making a cake mix, you don’t have to follow the instructions on the box. Replace water with milk, replace oil with softened butter, and add one extra egg to get the best out of a cake mix.
What is a Bundt Cake?
A Bundt cake is simply a cake that is baked in a bundt pan. It is shaped into a special doughnut shape. It is inspired by a traditional European cake known as Gugelhupf. But, Bundt cakes are not generally engaged to any single recipe.
Origin of โBundtโ Cake Name
In the north of Germany Gugelhupf is traditionally known as Bundkuchen which is a name formed by joining the two words โBundโ that means bundle or bunch and โKuchenโ which means kitchen.
Design of Bundt Cakes
Bundt cakes are not referred to any single recipe. Their characterizing feature is their shape. A Bundt pan generally has fluted or grooved sides, but its most defining design element is the central tube which leaves a cylindrical hole through the center of the cake.
Three Ways To Easily Remove A Bundt Cake From The Pan
Use A Spatula
Get your spatula and run in along the inside edges of the pan. Also, you can butter your knife to help loosen the cake from the side. But, you donโt want to cut your cake. Be careful when using your knife. You can flip your knife to the non-edged side and run it along the inside edges of the pan.
Let the Oil Freeze
This method may be especially helpful if you grease your bundt cake pan with liquid oil or nonstick spray. Simply put your bundt cake in the freezer for about 5 minutes to help harden the oil so that it can become firm enough to be scraped off with a spatula or a knife.
Re-Bake It
If the bundt cake is still stuck in the pan and youโre having trouble removing it, toss it back into the oven for about 5 minutes no more. Watch out! You donโt want to over-bake it. After 5 minutes, remove the Bundt cake and it should come out easily. If not, run the spatula along the inside edges to help loosen it up.
Apple Bundt Cake Recipe Tips
- Use fresh baking apples. You want to use firm, tart baking apples that hold their shapes in this cake. I used fresh Gala apples. They are excellent for baking. Granny Smith, Mutsu, Jonathan, and Pink Ladies are good choices too.
- Shred apples or use big chunks of apples in this cake. Spread the apples evenly in the bowl before pouring in the bundt pan.
- Tap the bundt pan on the counter before you put it in the oven. This will release any air bubbles trapped in the batter and help apples settle in the pan.
- Let the cake cool down completely before slicing or sprinkling powdered sugar. Allowing the cake to cool down will give it a moist, more firm texture and stronger apple cake. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool down completely.
Frequently Asked Questions:
The main difference between Bundt cake and regular has to do with the shape of the pan. Simply it is the doughnut-like shape of the Bundt pan with the grooved side that is mainly whatโs making it different.
The top side of the Bundt cake is the rounded side of the cake, not the flat side.
A cake in a Bundt pan is more in contact with the edges of the pan. So, the heat is distributed more evenly. If you put a pound cake into a regular round cake pan, it will not cook in the center or it will burn on the edges.
