This incredibly moist chocolate cake is made with chocolate cake mix, topped with homemade chocolate whipped cream frosting, and it's just what you need when you're craving sweet goodies. The cake is already super fluffy on it's own, but nobody says no to a soft creamy chocolate frosting spread on the top. The two will make a delicious combination.

When it comes to chocolate, there's no thinking twice!

A light flavorful chocolate cake with whipped cream frosting is the best dessert to accompany any occasion whether it's a birthday party, a graduation party, or even a family gathering. This recipe is nothing fancy but it has never failed me during times when I needed something quick and simple yet so yummy, especially when presented chilled. It only requires one bowl to make and no more than a few additions to the ready cake mix. This moist chocolate cake will make you sigh with delight!

The Secret Ingredient for a Rich Chocolate Cake

Coffee pairs amazingly well with cocoa! A teaspoon of instant coffee added into the cake batter will deepen the chocolaty flavor without adding that noticeably intense coffee flavor, so don't worry!

More Ingredients to Elevate Your Cake

A chocolate flavored cake is already a win win, however it tastes even better when combined with chocolate chips! The melted chocolate will add a spark to the overall flavor and create a smoother consistency. Another great addition would be a pinch of peppermint or cinnamon. Although it's not very common, but such spices can work a wonderful contrast with chocolate. Eventually, you'll end up with a colorful twist that will make your taste buds go crazy!

    About the Frosting

Am I the only one who rarely gets excited about cake unless it's frosted? Not only does frosting make your cake more appealing but it also balances the flavor and creates this beautifully silky texture that blends well with the cake making every bite feel heavenly. And the best part is that it can go on top of any cake flavor, whether it's strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate, there's always room for frosting!

It is important to make sure that the ingredients for your frosting are cold when it's time to whip. This will keep the frosting stable and easy to spread on top of the cake. Also, don't over beat, Seriously. Over beating the cream cheese can ruin its consistency making it too runny, and if you do the same for whipped cream you'll end up with butter.

Other Frostings that Go Well with Chocolate Cake

    Chocolate Ganache

The world's simplest frosting, being prepared with only two ingredients- melted chocolate and cream, and it's thick enough to make a perfect topping for your cakes. An easier version is a water ganache which uses water instead of cream. This one will do an excellent job in creating those smooth cake drips in case you're making cake layers.

    Buttercream Frosting

Now that's a classic. The all-time buttercream is nothing but a 1 cup of soft room temperature butter whipped until creamy then mixed with 3 cups of powdered sugar and few drops of vanilla extract. Trust me when I say, it's the richest frosting to decorate with and it combines perfectly well with cake flavor .

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the cake last?

While refrigerated, the cake can last up to 3 days if frosted, and up to a week if not.

Why does my cake have a gummy-like consistency?

You might have over mixed the cake batter, which gave it that dense texture. You want to mix the batter just until the ingredients are incorporated. Another reason might be that the ingredients added were cold. Try setting them at room temperature ahead of time for future bakes.

Why did my cake sink in the middle?

A common mistake is opening the oven door too often. Once hot air rushes out of the oven, the temperature drops causing the cake to collapse. The oven door should stay closed for at least ¾ of the time.

Can I prepare the frosting without cream cheese?

Yes you can do that but it's preferable to use less sugar. The frosting will still come out to be stable.
