Making your own cake from scratch gives you an extra soft and moist inside, a fudgy yet light texture and taste you’ve never tasted before! Especially with this recipe being so easy to make with ingredients on hand, why not?
The only equipment you need for this Easy Chocolate Cake:
- An electric hand mixer
- 8″ round cake tin
Easy Chocolate Cake ingredients:
- 1 cup Flour
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup Oil
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1 cup Buttermilk (Buttermilk powder for Cooking and Baking)
- 2 tablespoon Instant Coffee
Step-by-Step Chocolate Cake from scratch:
- In a bowl, sift the dry ingredients.
- Add the eggs, oil and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix well with a hand mixer. The batter should look like a brownie batter.
- In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk with instant coffee and gradually add it to the brownie batter. The batter should have a runny consistency.
- Pour the batter into a greased cake pan (I used an 8ร8 round cake pan) and bake in a preheated oven at 350 F for 35 minutes.
Let’s talk about frosting! Oh so simple! Made from the basic ingredients you find at home.. milk, sugar, flour, cocoa powder, butter and a dash of vanilla extract, your Chocolate Sauce frosting is done!
Basic Chocolate Sauce Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoon flour
- 3 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Step by Step Chocolate Sauce:
- Put a saucepan on medium heat and add the milk, flour, sugar and unsweetened cocoa power. Whisk very well.
- Once the sauce has thickened, remove the saucepan from the stove and mix in the butter and vanilla extract.
- Cover the Chocolate Sauce with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to cool down.
- Your Chocolate Sauce is done!
Frequently asked Questions
Yes, white sugar can be replaced with brown sugar. I prefer to use brown sugar because it has more molasses and so gives the chocolate cake a nice dark colour.
Technically, yes you can but its the buttermilk that gives the cake that moist texture. *Top Tip* If you donโt have buttermilk on hand, you can make it very easily. Pour 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice into a cup and fill the rest of the cup with milk. Stir the mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes. Now you have your very own homemade buttermilk!
Its always best to use oil to achieve the perfect moistness and velvety crumbs.
