    Making Fried Wontons

Making your own wontons is not only easy, but it is also fun. For the filling, you have to combine ground meat, minced veggies, soy sauce, seasoning, and cornstarch. Since we will be making spicy chicken wontons for this recipe, our choice of meat is chicken. You could just as easily substitute the protein with turkey, beef, vegetables, seafood, shrimp, or combinations of these.

Place a spoonful of the well-combined filling in the middle of the wonton wrapper. Fold them and keep them on a side as you heat the oil. After the wrappers have been folded, fry the wonton until they turn golden brown. Serve them piping hot!

What is the Best Way to Serve Wontons?

Commonly, wontons are served with a sweet and sour sauce, duck sauce, or plum sauce. We will be doing chicken wontons with chili sauce, but feel free to mix it up as you please. If a dipping sauce is not your thing, wontons are also great eaten alone. Another delicious way to serve fried wontons is with Tabbouleh.

Many people do not like deep-frying it, as it makes the food suck in too much oil. However, there is no other way to perfect a wonton. You could try a steamed chicken wonton recipe, but you would not achieve the golden-brown crispy goodness a crispy Fried Chicken Wonton recipe is sure to produce.

    Folding Fried Chicken Wonton Ways

First Way to Fold Chicken Wonton

Lay out a single sheet of wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Dip a finger in water and apply an outline on the four sides of the wrapper. Spoon out a dollop of the filling into the center and start folding by taking two edges of the wrapper, bringing them to the center, and sealing them shut with a little pressure. Seal the sides horizontally keeping an air pocket at the top. Rotate the wonton and seal the top part now, forming a star shape. Apply a little pressure on opposite ends from the midpoint to crimp it a little, giving the shape more dimension.

Second Way to Fold Chicken Wonton

Place the wonton wrapper on a flat surface and dab some water along the edges. Spoon out some filling near one of the edges, not totally at corner. Flatten the mixture out, so it can be folded into a cylinder-like shape. Take the edge and fold it over about ¾ of the entire wrapper, sealing the border shut. Raise the other corners of the wrapper along with the folded sided and press to seal. Take the corner and fold them toward yourself, using a thumb to create an indent in the middle. Lastly, close the two edges with pressure. You should have a ring shaped wonton.

Tips and Tricks to Master Fried Wontons

    • Actually, you can fold Wontons in any way you like. We provide instruction for two different folds, but you can also switch out complex folds for a triangle shape by folding the wrapping over.
    • The filling can be prepared up to one day prior to making the wontons.
    • Use a cooking thermometer to prevent your oil from overheating. The wontons can burn if the oil is too hot. If too cold, the wontons absorb excessive grease and end up with a heavier texture.
    • Wontons taste best is just when they out of the pan, but you can also store leftovers in the fridge to reheat in the oven when needed.
