    Differences Between Cupcakes and Muffins

Have you ever wondered what's the difference between cupcakes and muffins as they look extremely similar in shape?

First, the use of frosting is the main difference. We don’t add any frosting atop of muffins, while topping a cupcake with a whipped sweet cream is a must. Muffins like in this Double Chocolate Banana Muffin Recipe are topped with chocolate chips or chunks.

Secondly, they differ in ingredients, obviously, but the point here is that muffins call for less sugar than cupcakes. That’s why you’ll find more healthy muffin recipes than that of cupcakes.

Muffins are a popular savory option. So, most muffin flavors are either sweet or savory and considered a cake-like sweet bread. While cupcakes are a dessert treat. Most of their flavors are sweet or fruity topped with a sugary whipped cream as I mentioned before.

Furthermore, as muffins are similar to bread, they have a denser texture than that of cupcakes. Cupcakes have a light and fluffy texture.

When speaking about decoration, cupcakes are winners. It is known that cupcakes are more decorative than muffins. You can add sprinkles, candies, frosting designs, and colorful paper liners. Muffins are mostly not decorated and presented plain.

Ingredients for the Best Chocolate Muffins

Here is what you need to make the prefect chocolate muffins:

Bananas: Before making chocolate banana bread muffins, make sure the bananas on your counter are completely ripe. Dark ripe bananas are sweeter and have a stronger banana flavor in baked goods.

Butter: I used butter in my recipe. However, you can use canola or vegetable oil.

Eggs: The eggs provides moisture to the batter.

Brown sugar: Brown sugar makes these banana muffins sweet and moist.

All-Purpose Flour: This is the primary dry ingredient in these banana muffins.

Cocoa Powder: You will need unsweetened cocoa powder for these muffins.

Baking soda and baking powder: A combination of these two will make muffins rise up nicely.

Chocolate chips: You can use dark or milk chocolate chips. Don't skip these. They make the texture of your muffins divine.

Chocolate chunks: To top your muffins with.

    Vanilla for flavor

Salt: A little salt balances the flavor.

    Interesting Facts About Muffins

To begin with, a Muffin is a small spongy cake-like baked food. You can find two types of muffins: English muffins or quick bread and American muffins or flatbread.

Furthermore, quick bread muffins which are usually called simply as muffins, were first made in the United States in the mid 19th century. That happened after inventing baking powder which made baking possible.

Muffin’s name is first found in print in 1703. It was spelled moofin. Its origin is not certain, but possibly derived from the Low German “Muffen”, the plural of “Muffe” which mean a small cake and probably has a connection to the Old French word “Moufflet” which means a soft as said of bread.

Lastly, on October 16th, 2015, the largest muffin in the world weighing 146.65 kg (323 lb.) was baked in Milan, Italy.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are my chocolate muffins dense?

If you add too much liquid in the batter, the muffins will turn to be very dense. Also, if there is too much baking soda or baking powder, muffins will rise, then suddenly collapse. These cause muffins to become dense

Why do muffins crack on top?

Cracks on top of muffins or even any baked cake-like dessert mean they are rising too fast because the temperature of the oven is too high. Slightly lower temperature.

Why did my muffins come out dry?

The main cause of muffin dryness is when you overmix the batter and overcook the muffins. Follow the instructions step by step and don’t exceed the time set to bake your muffins.

    Top Tips

Use high quality cocoa powder. High quality cocoa powder will produce a richer, smoother, fudgier chocolate banana muffin.

Don’t over mix the batter. Overmixing can ruin your muffins. When you overmix, you encourage the batter to form more gluten bonds which can lead to a tougher, chewier, muffin texture.

Make sure your bananas are ripe. Ripe bananas make the texture of the batter moist.
