Sweet, Tangy, with a Kick of Heat
What Is Sriracha?
Sriracha hot sauce is a traditional Thai dipping sauce that has become a global sensation due to its fresh, spicy, thick-textured goodness. David Tran, who founded and still owns Huy Fong Foods, made Sriracha famous.
Huy Fong founded Sriracha in Irwindale, California in 1980. To meet the ever-increasing demand for the sauce, 100 million pounds of chilies are required each year! Fresh red jalapenos, to be exact.
These pungent chilies caused local residents to complain of “burning eyes, irritated throats, and headaches” in 2013, putting Huy Fong in the spotlight for reasons other than its delicious sauce. Other companies such as Tabasco, Frank’s Red Hot, and Heinz, produce their own version now.

How Is It Made?
Sriracha comes in a variety of flavors and pepper combinations. The chilis are first blended into a thick paste. Then a special blend of vinegar, salt, sugar, and garlic is added. I make my delicious Honey Sriracha Sauce by simply adding honey, lemon, and more garlic to the sauce.
Slather It on As a Glaze
What to Serve Honey Sriracha Sauce With?
You’ll be surprised at how delicious this Honey Sriracha Sauce is. Because of the Sriracha, you might expect it to be extremely spicy, but the honey significantly reduces the spice level while significantly increasing the deliciousness.
These two flavors together are the perfect accompaniment to chicken drumsticks or chicken thighs. Honey sriracha chicken tastes amazing! It will be a new best friend to most of your dishes!
Instead of a melted butter or a vegetable oil, use sriracha as a glaze onย chicken wings (try my Crispy keto Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings recipe), meatballs, sweet potatoes, and even as a sauce on such great recipes as potatoesย andย brussels sprouts. Anywhere that you would useย BBQ sauceย is a candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
For a healthier option, you can serve this salad with spinach salad or a veggie tray. It also tastes great with spinach, avocado, and a variety of other vegetables.
Any liquid sweetener will do; just keep in mind that the flavors from the sweetener will be present in the finished sauce. Simple syrup adds nothing while maple syrup tends to overpower. I always have local honey on hand because it really complements the sauce.
Yes! This Honey Sriracha Sauce is ideal for marinating your preferred proteins for your daily diet. Simply coat your preferred protein in the sauce and set aside for at least 30 minutes (up to 24 hours) before cooking.
Because of the sriracha sauce, this Honey Sriracha Sauce recipe is slightly spicy. If you want it to be spicier, add more sriracha or red chili flakes. Use less sriracha sauce to make a milder version.
Use It as a Dip!
Step by Step Instructions
- Add honey, sriracha sauce, salt, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and lemon juice to a small saucepan. Whisk to combine.
- Bring it to a boil over medium heat while whisking consistently. Let it simmer until it reaches desired consistency about 6-7 minutes.
- Use this spicy sweet sauce as a dipping sauce or brush it over chicken.
Hint: If you’re storing it, you may need to reheat it in the microwave in a small bowl for a few seconds to make it liquid again. The honey can become stiff in the refrigerator.
Substitutions
- If you don’t have Sriracha sauce on hand, you can use a knockoff version made in the United States called โrooster sauceโ as a substitute, or use high fructose corn syrup instead.
Variations
- Smoky: If you want a smoky Honey Sriracha Sauce, add in smoked paprika or chipotle powder.
- Spicy: Use a pinch of cayenne pepper, or a little bit of red chili pepper flakes, or chili powder in the sauce ingredients for extra heat.
A Sweet Complement for Your Favorite Foods
Storage
- Refrigerate the honey sriracha sauce in an airtight container or a well sealed container with a sanitized lid for up to 2 weeks.
- It is not recommended to freeze the honey sriracha sauce because it will become too watery when thawed to room temperature.
Top Tips
If you want to use this great sauce as a salad dressing, add an additional tablespoon or two of water to thin it out and use it cold.
You can add additional sriracha sauce or honey to make it sweeter or spicier according to your personal preference.
Food safety
- Donโt walk away from the stove top when making the sauce. It heats up fast and comes to a gentle boil quickly. Make sure you stir it constantly.
