The result is delicious aromatic bread.

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp salt

Topping ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • sesame seeds
  • black seeds

As for the topping ingredients, any type of seeds that you like or have on hand can be used. For example, black sesame seeds, nigella seeds, and hemp seeds.

How to Make Ramadan Bread

  1. In a bowl, add water, yeast, and sugar. Mix them and set your bowl aside until the yeast activates.
  2. Once the yeast has activated, add flour, salt, egg white, and the 2 tbsps of olive oil.
  3. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes on a floured surface until a ball is formed. It’s normal for the dough to be a little sticky. Oil your hands before working with the dough.
  4. Oil a bowl and place the dough ball in there, then cover it with plastic wrap. Keep the dough covered in a warm place for an hour until it has doubled in size.
  5. Place the dough on a clean, floured surface and knead it with your hands or with a rolling pin until a round or oval shape is formed. Cover your baking dish with baking paper and place the shaped dough in it
  6. Mix 2 tbsps. Of water with 4 tbsps. Of flour to form a paste. Dip your fingers or a fork in the paste and go around the edges of the bread to form a nice crust. With the same method, shape the middle of the dough to a baklava or diamond pattern.
  7. Cover the bread and let it rest for another hour. It will be rise up and be very puffy.
  8. Combine the egg yolk with 1 tbsp. Of yogurt and 1 tbsp. Of olive oil. Use your finger very gently to brush the bread with the mixture.
  9. Sprinkle the bread with toasted sesame seeds and black seeds.
  10. Bake on the pre-heated oven at 375 F for 15-20 minutes.
  11. When the bread is taken out of the oven, cover it with a kitchen towel to keep it warm and soft.
